Readers Respond: How Big (or Small) is Your Computer Network?

Perhaps you own a simple home network with just a few PCs, or a more complex one with game consoles and cameras. Maybe you manage a company's enterprise network that includes network printers, servers and videoconferencing equipment in addition to standard clients. Those who operate Wi-Fi hotspots are likely to see a diverse mix of laptops, tablets and smartphones cycle through the network.

Just how big (or small) are the networks you're responsible for? Do you have any especially interesting gadgets connected to it? On your home network, what kind of devices are installed, and how many? Tell Us About Your Setup

25 computer network

It's for students taking online real time exams for English language courses. Can one router be enough for 25 computers in a network? I guess I must use one switch? (and of course the modem to connect to the Net). [Ed.: Very large Ethernet routers can handle 25 computers, but a 16-port router plus a 16-port switch, or similar combinations can also be used and are generally more cost effective.]

Offices 2 km apart

I have two company offices, and they are located in the different places in the same town. I want to provide Internet facilities for each office plus an intranet that will provide services for both offices including access to client information, email facilities and file storage.

One computer and wanting more

Looking for a router that will work with my Sprint wireless 727 [cell modem] device. I cannot get DSL or cable where I live. I have been using this device for 3 years but wonder if I couldn't get to use more than one computer with it if there is a router that would work. The new hotspot devices are 4g, and they don't work as well as the device I have.

A Non-Working Cluster

I have four computers on one router. It goes Dsl Modem to broadband router with four computers attached. 2 desktops, one laptop, one netbook. They all have Internet service but no sharing of any kind. At one time I had enter connectivity, but when I had to reinstall the O/S I lost it. I can't use Wi-Fi because of a password issue, and I don't know how to remove those settings.

Wired switch +WAP for TV+phones+consoles

I recently purchased a Linksys E2500 wireless router. While my wireless nodes(2 iphones and a PS3) are getting good performance, my wired nodes(running from the back of the router which has 100Mbps ports- a Dell Desktop, a DirecTV DECA Broadband adapter which serves 3 receivers, and an XBox 360 which I use intermittingly), are considerably slow. On my Dell it takes a good 10-15 seconds to open a web page. I am using an XFinity Ubee 3.0 Cable Modem that I've clocked consistently at 24Mbps on the WAN; the exact same configuration with my previous router, a Linksys WRT54G, produced significantly better performance, but I upgraded because it stopped pulling DHCP from Comcast 5-6x times daily. Yesterday I bought a D-Link Gigabit 5-port switch, deciding to use Linksys solely as a WAP and plugging my wired nodes into new switch.

Church and homeless shelter project

Planning to set up a network for a church that is three blocks away from a womens' shelter and both places together have a total of about 42 computers. I don't have a clear line of sight, and i would like to go wireless or preferably a cable modem. The church has a classrooom with 20 kids and the shelter has twenty rooms for homeless women. Also would like to put a computer in main office and in the church lobby... .

I have a table top PC and an Ipad 2. My flat is in the 8th floor. To operate the tablet, I am not sure what is the ideal router available in India to get.

2 phones and a dog

NETGEAR N600 Wireless Dual Band G-bit ADSL2+ Modem Router. HP2575 wired to that with print access from all of these, Epson 320 Workforce w/ WiFi, Tower w/WinXP, Toshiba w/Vista (both wired) Second Generation Tablet (this thin belongs in the Smithonian) w/Win Tablet Edition and Linksys 10/100 USB Wireless, NetBook w/Win7, HP ZD8000 US w/Win XP w/Broadcom Wireless, Droid X, Droid 4G and a Sling. Every thing connects and functions except the Sling (dirty Dog) if I could get that functioning I'd be a "happy camper". (Building a media center for fun).

Ben's New Home Network

I have 1 desktop computer running Windows 7, 1 laptop computer running Windows Vista and 1 older HP All-in-One printer (which will likely be replaced by a WiFi enabled model). We have DSL service from AT&T, using a SpeedStream modem and a Linksys WRTG54G router (which no longer broadcasts the WiFi signal, just acts as a passthrough for the ethernet line). The printer is wired to the desktop via a USB cable, and the laptop only connects to the internet via the router (no printer access).
