What Is a Network Router Warranty?

By Bradley Mitchell, About.com

Question: What Is a Network Router Warranty?
Answer: Makers of network routers usually offer a manufacturer's warranty as part of the product. The terms of a router warranty vary greatly between vendors and are an important factor to consider when comparing products.

Typical router warranties cover the unit for one, two or three years. Occasionally, a retail outlet may offer to extend the length of warranties when purchasing routers from their stores. A few vendors offer lifetime warranties on their routers. Naturally, longer warranties are generally preferable to shorter ones.

The warranty is intended to cover basic flaws in the router's manufacturing and hardware logic. They typically do not cover against the following:

  • electric power surges in the home
  • spilled liquid or other water damage
  • installing third party firmware
Additionally, router warranties normally only apply to the original buyer and not to products purchased used. Because the details of coverage can differ between vendors, study the warranty terms carefully.
