Introduction to the Ares Network
Free P2P file sharing

By , About.com Guide

Ares is a free P2P network with several supporting clients available. These client applications enable free file sharing over Ares P2P network protocols.

History of Ares

When first introduced in 2002, Ares was simply a music sharing client that connected to the Gnutella P2P network. The next year, however, Ares branched off to become its own network. Ares has enjoyed steady growth and quiet popularity, maintaining stable technology and avoiding much of the controversy associated with some other P2P file sharing systems.

Ares Network Clients

Those connecting to the Ares network use one of four P2P client programs:
  • Ares Galaxy, the original standard client
  • Warez P2P, an Ares Galaxy clone
  • FileCroc
  • giFT (with an Ares plugin)

What About Ares Lite?

The creators of Ares Galaxy also created an Ares Lite application. Ares Lite was a version of the original client that ran more efficiently on Windows 98 and other old Windows clients by requiring less computer processing power and memory. In all other respects, Ares Lite functions the same as the Regular Edition of Ares Galaxy. The creators of Ares Lite do not generally offer it for download any longer as its usefulness has diminished with time.

What Is Ares P2P?

"Ares P2P" is the name of a cross-platform P2P client offered at aresp2p.net. Ares P2P is not related specifically to the Ares network.
