Facebook is reportedly testing a new free Wi-Fi service. The company is apparently setting up some smaller businesses with a special Internet hotspot setup that allows free access for people who check in with their Facebook accounts when signing on.

This seems like a no-brainer for users: Who wouldn't want free Wi-Fi? On the other hand, free Facebook Wi-Fi doesn't make much sense from the business perspective. If your company already offers free public Internet, why would you want to involve Facebook and host some of their equipment? It's also highly unlikely that Facebook would pay to subsidize all the businesses that currently charge for their hotspot access. And companies that don't provide public Wi-Fi generally have a good reason also (usually, that there aren't enough visitors to make it worthwhile).
