What Happens When an Airline Network Fails

By , About.com GuideAugust 29, 2012

Follow me on:

United Airlines endured a 2-hour computer network outage today, generating hundreds of articles from news outlets and a corresponding flurry of discussion on social networks. The outages resulted in significant delays for thousands of United travelers and some downtime for United's Web site. A few pieces of luggage may have been lost, although it's unclear whether that's any different from the typical everyday lost luggage that airlines are famous for. Fortunately, no one appears to have been physically injured.
Update: United confirmed a failed piece of communications hardware caused 580 delayed and nine canceled flights.

Would you boycott an airline like United because of its network failures, or do you consider it a reasonable risk in return for the benefits of the technology?
