186 Gbps - A New Internet Speed Record

By December 23, 2011

Follow me on:

Academic researchers and their partners demonstrated this month a long-distance fiber optic network link transferring data at 186 Gbps. It's a new world record for Internet data transfer, surpassing previous experiments like the 107 Gbps network speed record achieved by Siemens five years ago and the previous record holder of 119 Gbps in 2009. Note that 186 Gbps represents actual user data sent from one computer and received by another; to achieve this requires a connection with an even higher theoretical maximum rating.
