Last year at this time, Cisco Systems projected Internet traffic would increase 6x by 2012. Cisco has now updated their forecast taking into account the latest trends and economic conditions, but the result is about the same: IP network traffic is projected to exceed 500 exabytes per year within three years. The majority of this traffic is expected to come from sharing videos across the Internet.
Some of you may be wondering, though: What is an exabyte? It's equal to one million terabytes or one billion gigabytes. In other words, an incredibly huge amount of data.
