Using GeoIP for Geolocation

Wednesday May 20, 2009
Geolocation attempts to map the physical location of a computer by its IP address. One of the most popular geolocation services available online is GeoIP. Web site owners can subscribe to the GeoIP database to provide customized information to visitors according to their location. Developers can access the service via any of several standard programming interfaces including a Ruby GeoIP gem. It happens to be part of the recently released Wolfram Alpha search engine.

IP geolocation services have been criticized in the past for being inaccurate, difficult to use, or far charging too high of fees. Is GeoIP a good geolocation system?
