The Best Broadband Countries - OECD (2007)
Wednesday April 25, 2007
| Commentary | A study released this week by the Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development has ranked 30 countries by their availability of broadband Internet service. While the U.S. boasts the largest total number of broadband subscribers, it ranks only 15th per capita when adjusting for population size, well behind front-runners Denmark and the Netherlands. The U.S. has been declining in such surveys in recent years as other countries have been able to roll out broadband Internet service more quickly and sometimes at much cheaper prices. Other interesting results:
- Cable Internet is more popular than DSL only in two of these 30 countries - the U.S. and Canada
- Korea and Japan continue to have a large lead in advanced fiber optic Internet services
- Reflecting the huge disparity in their populations, Iceland is ranked third in the survey with less than 100,000 broadband subscribers, and Mexico is ranked 30th (last) with 3+ million subscribers.
