WinMx.com Host File Fix for WinMX P2P Clients
Restore your connection to the WinMX network

By Bradley Mitchell, About.com

Most WinMX users lost their network connectivity on 20 September 2005 when the winmx.com central host was shut down. However, by patching the network hosts file on your Windows PC, you can restore your connection to the WinMX P2P network. Here's how:
 • Open the system32\drivers\etc folder in Windows Explorer. The "system32" folder is located under the Windows root (by default either "C:\Windows" or "C:\WINNT"

 • Copy the file named "hosts" to a different location, for backup purposes.

 • Download a patched "hosts" file, and replace your original file with this one

 • Restart WinMX

 • If this fails, flush your Internet name cache using the ipconfig /flushdns Windows command.

 • Restart WinMX

 • If this fails, reboot your computer
