Two router networks provide useful new capabilities in several situations:
- Extending a wired network based on one Ethernet router to include Wi-Fi capability via a wireless second router.
- Building a subnetwork within the overall home network to limit the Internet access of certain devices, or to isolate their network traffic
- Having a working backup unit available in case one router suddenly fails to function
