Z-Wave technology is ideal for window and door sensors where running wires to the desired location is difficult, if not impossible. Z-Wave home automation wireless sensors are typically used to trigger events, while door and window sensors are often used to turn on lights or activate alarms.

Sensors for Home Security

Door and window sensors are commonly used for home security by triggering Z-Wave controlled lights to come on and/or alarms to sound. Because the sensors are battery powered and have ranges of approximately 100 feet (30 meters), they can be used on any exterior door or window to alert you of a break-in. Because the sensors are part of a wireless home automation system, there is virtually no way a would-be burglar can defeat them. When the two halves of the sensor are separated, a signal is immediately sent to the linked light or alarm.

Automatic Lighting Brings Added Safety and Convenience

Z-Wave sensors can also be used to automatically turn on room or closet lights when the door is opened. Install a light in your kitchen cabinet and you can use a sensor on the cabinet door to turn the light on when the cabinet is opened. Installing a sensor on the bathroom medicine cabinet can alert you when children may be in the cabinet and potentially in danger.

Where to Find Z-Wave Window and Door Sensors

Companies such as Everspring and Home Manageables manufacture Z-Wave window and door sensors that work off AAA batteries. Aeon manufactures a window/door sensor that runs off a CR2 (camera) battery. All of these products are designed for homeowners to self install.
