In Part 1 of the Xpedio Product Overview, we discussed at a high level the design goals of the Xpedio product family from Intranet Solutions, Inc®. In Part 2, we look specifically at Xpedio Content Server™.

Xpedio Content Server provides a technology foundation for content management solutions in the Xpedio product family. Content Server is a Java engine with an implementation based on Intranet Solutions' Intra.doc!® product offering.

At a high level, Content Server offers three key features:

  • Deployment
  • Personalization
  • Usage Tracking
Deployment features include automatic publishing and indexing of documents. Xpedio Content Server supports automatic conversion of files to common Web formats such as HTML and PDF. For document and file searching/indexing capability, the product embeds third-party technology from Verity. Content Server also includes versioning and email-based workflow capabilities.

Content Server manages personalization through user profiles. At a high level, users subscribe to information of interest; the product then supports delivery of the information as well as updates to the profiles themselves.

Usage tracking allows changes accesses and changes to data to be tied to individuals through user login, browser access, or other means. In general, Xpedio security stays centralized at the Content Server, although this in turn can integrate with other security models such as domains or LDAP.

Content Server installs on either Microsoft Windows/NT or Sun Solaris operating systems. The Server interfaces to a relational database; supported databases include Microsoft SQL Server (for Windows/NT) and Oracle (for either Solaris or Windows/NT). Intranet Solutions recommends a minimum 256 MB of main memory for computers running its Content Servers.

In addition to the product itself, Intranet Solutions offers the Xpedio Content Server QuickStart Program. This program offers approximately one week of onsite assistance with database installation, security setup, Web design, and business rule configuration.

Overall, the Xpedio Content Server becomes much more powerful when deployed in conjuction with the add-on modules currently available for it. We will look at these two components -- Xpedio Content Publisher™ and Xpedio ReportSite™ -- in Part 3 of this series.
