To most people, "buying Linksys" means choosing some model of their home networking equipment to purchase. News reports are indicating, though, that Cisco Systems is now looking to sell off the entire Linksys business. Cisco paid USD $500 million to acquire Linksys in 2003. Since then, the company has continued to sell network gear under that name (the more recent products called "Linksys by Cisco") despite some plans to do away with the Linksys brand
going back five years or more.
Trade rumors suggest Belkin is in the running to acquire Linksys. Opinions vary of how good a job the company did in building or maintaining this brand, but few expect it will sell for $500 million again this time. If you were Belkin or another prospective buyer, how much would you pay?
: The price is not yet disclosed, but on January 25th Belkin confirms it's intent to buy Linksys
