Beware of Holiday Shopping Over Free Wi-Fi

By November 27, 2012

When shopping for gifts this holiday season, you might be using a smartphone to talk or text with family, and sometimes surf the Net from a free Wi-Fi hotspot while resting or standing in line. Do you also plan to use it for purchasing gifts online? If so, you're taking a risk that the hotspots are legitimate and that your Wi-Fi connection won't be hacked. Free Wi-Fi hotspots in particular can be set up by criminals looking to trap unsuspecting guests who log in. But that's just one of the HPD Top 10 Holiday Internet Scams of 2012, published by the Houston (TX, USA) police department. Be prepared and avoid all of them.
