By , About.com GuideJune 22, 2012

Follow me on:

For only $29 USD, you can now use your Mac's Thunderbolt adapter to connect to Ethernet networks. Apple started selling this new type of cable adapter this month. It supports up to Gigabit Ethernet speeds, resulting in noticeably faster network data transfers compared to Wi-Fi wireless connections. It performs roughly 10 times as fast as the older Apple USB Ethernet Adapter for the same price. What you'll need to use this new adapter:
  • a Mac having one or more Thunderbolt ports
  • ability to reach a cable from the Mac to an Ethernet network switch or router, and, optional but necessary to get the best performance
  • Gigabit Ethernet capability on the switch or router
