What does a top-of-the-line home network router look like? For this week, at least, it closely resembles the Linksys E4200 now available from Cisco Systems. Its basic features - Wireless-N and Gigabit Ethernet support - aren't anything special nowadays. The things that make Linksys E4200 a high end router (with a high end price tag) include:
- integrated signal amplifier hardware that increases its wireless connectivity range
- a built-in USB port for adding external storage devices that can be shared across the home network
- a built-in media server that uses UPnP technology to stream video and audio to other compatible devices like the Xbox 360
- Quality of Service (QoS) technology that helps the device manage network traffic to minimize stuttering audio or video
