A hotzone is a strategically placed Wi-Fi hotspot designed specifically to provide increased data bandwidth to phones in crowded areas. Some downtown areas like the Spokane Hot Zone are already covered as part of municipal Wi-Fi initiatives, while other hotzones are being set up by cellular carriers looking to better to support their customers. Most smartphones nowadays support connecting by either cell or Wi-Fi methods, but the bandwidth between these is not automatically shared, meaning customers must manually change their phone settings over to Wi-Fi connections should they want to take advantage of a hotzone.
