The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is interested in promoting its National Broadband Plan. If managed well, this effort will help expand the availability of high-speed Internet to all of the U.S. population. Between now and February when this plan is due to be finalized and presented to the U.S. Congress, the FCC is apparently interested in getting public feedback on their ideas. Among other moves they have recently started Blogband to help focus discussion on this important topic.

Note that the FCC defines broadband to include any Internet connection having a modest bandwidth of at least 768 Kbps for downloads (and even less for uploads). Just about any form of Internet access today meets these limits, but the difficulty comes in distributing such network access uniformly across the country at an affordable price. If the U.S. doesn't act quickly and invest a significant amount of money in this project, their plan may fail before it is even implemented.
