Anyone looking for an alternative to the Apple iPhone can now officially consider the Palm Pre, which began selling in some U.S. stores this weekend. The Pre shares many things in common with the iPhone with at least one notable difference. Besides cellular and Wi-Fi networking options standard on smartphones today, one feature Pre supports that iPhone currently doesn't is built-in stereo Bluetooth.
Stereo Bluetooth, sometimes referenced by its technical name Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP), is an expanded capability of the Bluetooth protocol that some older Bluetooth devices (including iPhone) may not support. Apple can likely enable A2DP on the iPhone, though, via firmware upgrade. It will be interesting to see what other technical advancements both Apple and Palm will bring to their phones in the future.
