Watch for File Size Limits on Email Messages

By February 1, 2009

Follow me on:

Gmail Login Screen - Internet Email Client All Internet-based email systems set a size limit on messages. For example, Gmail restricts messages to no larger than 20 MB while Windows Live Hotmail restricts messages to no larger than 10 MB. These size limits are controlled by the email provider. When you attempt to send messages larger than the limit, typically by attaching a large data file, the email client will show an error.

This limitation is not a problem with your home / computer network, nor can you change or bypass it. Email systems are configured this way to prevent server and network performance bottlenecks. Fortunately, most documents, photos, and audio files fit within the email size limits. To avoid this limitation, check the size of email attachments you send, compress files to be emailed if necessary, and send them individually if possible. Use other file transfer systems beside email for very large files such as videos.
