What Is P4P?

Monday August 25, 2008
P4P stands for Proactive Network Provider Participation for P2P, an industry initiative to improve the efficiency of peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. P4P enables Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to insert real-time information about their network topology and performance characteristics into P2P network protocols to influence how P2P systems choose their peers for file sharing. The idea: if P4P network data helps pair up file sharing computers that are geographically closer to each other, file transfers can run faster and network bandwidth is utilized more efficiently.
