How Much Faster Is The iPhone 3G?

Sunday July 13, 2008
The iPhone 3G promises faster cellular network capability than the original iPhone that is a 2G device. You should have any reason to doubt that iPhone 3G is faster. But how much faster? iPhone 3G uses the HSDPA cellular protocol that can support theoretical speeds up to 3.6 Mbps that is many times faster than the original iPhone's 2G EDGE system. In practice, however, you will never achieve such actual speeds with the iPhone 3G due to overhead of the software and cellular service.

The exact speed increase you should expect depends on my factors including how and where you use your phone. According to Apple, "email attachments and Web pages load twice as fast on 3G networks as on 2G EDGE networks." 2.4 times as fast in certain tests, to be precise. Your results may vary.
