The first case of P2P-based identity theft in the U.S. illustrates how one person was able to use LimeWire and other networks to grab credit card numbers, tax IDs and bank numbers. To safely participate on these networks, carefully control which folders of your hard drive are shared. This applies both to P2P programs and at the operating system level.
