Thousands of Travelers Stranded by Network Failure

| Commentary | A high-profile network outage stranded thousands of travelers at the Los Angeles International Airport this past weekend. Though many have the idea this was a "computer glitch," it seems the LAX computer system malfunction has actually been isolated to fiber optic cables.

Because network cables rarely fail, we often take their reliability for granted. It took about 8 hours in this case for officials to fix this particular problem which hopefully all agree is unacceptable. Organizations need to be prepared with trained people and backup equipment to more quickly find and recover from failures like this.
