The Technology Formerly Known As "Wireless Fidelity"

Monday May 7, 2007
| Commentary | Wi-Fi Planet and the Wi-Fi Alliance kindly remind you that the term Wi-Fi is not intended to be an acronym for Wireless Fidelity or any other phrase. According to the Wi-Fi Planet article, "it's been roughly seven years since 'wireless fidelity' was officially used or propagated in any way by the Wi-Fi Alliance."

Please disregard inconvenient references that suggest otherwise, such as this Wi-Fi Alliance whitepaper from February, 2004. It's a simple oversight (really, it is):
"... a promising market for wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) network equipment."
Looks like someone late to the party got it wrong alright. For a much better explanation of the issue, see this blog from the year 2005: WiFi Isn't Short for Wireless Fidelity. Yes, that's WiFi, not Wi-Fi. So while we are on the subject, please everyone stop typing 'WiFi' into the search engines so Web authors don't need to write this way. The Wi-Fi Alliance would appreciate it greatly.
