Ray Noorda 1924-2006 - Networking Pioneer
Saturday October 14, 2006
| Commentary | Ray Noorda has died at the age of 82. He led Novell, Inc. as CEO in the 1980s and 1990s and was sometimes called "the father of network computing" for his leadership in the network software developed there. These included the NetWare and UnixWare operating systems and Novell Directory Services (NDS).
In those days, Noorda and Novell were criticized for their inability to hold off the strong competition from Windows NT and later Microsoft products. Even though NetWare, UnixWare, and NDS have been mostly replaced by Microsoft Windows installations, Noorda deserves much credit for being one of the early visionaries for personal computer networking in corporations. Those of you who had the good fortune to meet Ray in the past or work with the Novell / NDS technologies, consider leaving your comments at the link below as a tribute.
