What Is Wibree?

Thursday October 5, 2006
| Commentary | This week, a number of tech companies announced the new "Wibree" wireless networking technology. Wibree is not much related to Wi-Fi the name notwithstanding; instead, it is actually comparable to Bluetooth. Once Wibree is an approved standard (hopefully sometime in 2007), expect it to have a wireless range like Bluetooth (about 30 feet / 10 m) and support similar bandwidth. Too limited to compete with Wi-Fi, Wibree is designed for use in toys, watches and other consumer gear that needs to run under limited electric / battery power.
