You can try Traffic Squeezer (trafficsqueezer.org) to accelerate VPN. I created 6 optimized VPN tunnels with it – finally I get 80% more faster VPN ;)

We have also a small ISP in Egypt where we tried accelerating customer web acceleration via Squid and Traffic Squeezer. In both scenarios it worked.
