Top Internet Trends for 2004
Saturday January 17, 2004
| Commentary | Each January, experts in Internet and networking traditionally offer their predictions for the top trends to watch during the coming year. Did you notice that this year's pronouncements were all remarkably similar? Top Internet Trends for 2004 from the Web Talk Guys is a representative look at the collective wisdom. I have a personal take on all this.
Anything with a high "cool" or "sizzle" factor is typically one or two years further away from hitting the mainstream, in my opinion, than what many experts predict. After all, it's human nature to engage in "wishful thinking" on nifty gadgets and the power of technology.
The more routine improvements to existing technology will happen easily. Mobility and wireless connectivity, growth of weblogs, and voice over IP, certainly should be ready for prime time. But with a higher "ho hum" factor, they won't be turning too many heads, either.
The truly good stuff, like Internet applications, a significant leap forward in online search, and connected digital media in the living room.... hang on a, it's going to be a bumpy road for awhile longer.
